Nature Conservation

Horse Copse SNCI is one of 1250 Sites of Nature Conservation Interest in Dorset which have been recognised by the Dorset Wildlife Trust as being important for wildlife. The copse adjoins the CL and is available for visitors to enjoy.

Horse Copse is a semi-natural deciduous woodland, listed on the Ancient Woodland Inventory, consisting mainly of Oak with Ash, with a Hazel understory, and covers an area of approximately 1 hectare. The ground flora is dominated by Bluebell and Ground Ivy.

Dorset notable plant species are important as indicators of age, community type and conservation importance of a woodland habitat, and thus aid in the selection of SNCIs. Dorset notable species recorded within the Horse Copse SNCI include: Moschantel, Yellow Archangel, Wood Spurge, Hairy Wood-rush, Bluebell, Butcher’s Broom and Wood Speedwell.
